Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan at Kohima College, Kohima

Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), introduced in 2014 at Kohima College, Kohima. ‘Infrastructure Grants to Colleges: Upgradation of Administrative Buildings’ and ‘Vocationalization of Higher Education: Floriculture’, were the two components implemented at the College under RUSA 1.0. Under RUSA 2.0, Infrastructure Grants to Colleges is the only component being implemented. The Nagaland Public Works Department (Housing), Education Division is the executing agency for the implementation of the infrastructure component. 6 (six) member institutional level RUSA project monitoring unit ensures the quality of works implemented by the contractors.

The College now boasts of a well-covered Dyna roofing courtyard which was undertaken in the category of Infrastructure grants to Colleges: Upgradation of Administrative buildings head. Other facilities that have been completed to date are the External Toilet for boys and girls which was an urgent requirement. One major achievement under the infrastructure project is the construction of the library building which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education on 5th July 2018.

Under volatilization, the college has introduced a career-oriented course on Floriculture with a capacity to accommodate 50 students under the course. The course aims at generating interest in self-employment, skill development, and curtailing the ever-rising unemployment problem. Through the course, the College also would like to promote the dignity of labour by following the ‘work and earn, while you study’ policy. The College has 3 (three) polyhouse units and another semi-polyhouse. The College relies on the students of the floriculture course for maintenance and tending of the flowers.

The College hopes that the project with the resources that RUSA is providing, will assist in ushering in better quality education and self-reliance in the long run.
